Bentonite Clay
Description
Bentonite Clay
Bentonite is widely used as texturizer, filler, thickener, and pigment binder. Bentonite Clay, also known as Montmorillonite, is part of the smectite clay group. and boasts a rich mineral composition, It consists mainly of silica (58-61%), aluminum (21-22%) and various other mineral which includes calcium, magnesium, sodium, copper, iron, and potassium.
Our bentonite clay originates from volcanic ash that has been trapped in Australian sea beds for countless years and mined locally. The entire process—from harvesting to drying and packaging—is chemical-free.
It complies with Food Standards Australia & NZ regulations and as such is done cruelty-free, vegan-friendly, and allergen-free. No artificial colorings, fragrances, or flow agents are added.
BENEFITS
- Used as thickener, absorbent, filler, texturizer and binder in various skin and hair care products and color cosmetics
- Has thickening and suspending properties (e.g suspends pigments) and effectively thickens and stabilizes emulsions
- Acts synergistically with common thickeners like xanthan gum and Hydroxyethyl cellulose
It is important to note that when working with bentonite that you add the bentonite as one of the first ingredient in the water phase and mix consistently and at high speed to allow the thickening process to activate. Once the product has thickened (1200 rpm -30+min) other additives can be added. ( yes one can also add the gum at the same time but not emulsifiers/surfactants or even preservatives till it has reached its thickening point)
Add to water phase of formulas to let the bentonite swell suggested (1200 rpm -30 min higher speed less time and visa versa) .
Swelling power is typically 15-18x its dry weight.
Typical use level 1-50%. For external use only.
As soap ingredient add 2 tablespoons of clay per kilo of oils and proceed as usual
