- Contains a variety of active ingredients including beta-glucans (responsible for water-holding functions), phenols, starch, avenanthramides, saponins, flavonoids, and also vitamin E
- Soothes stressed, blemished and irritated skin
- Helps to relieve dry and itchy skin
- Can be added to warm bath water a home remedy for itchy or dry skin (sprinkle about 1 cup of oatmeal to a full bath tub). The oats do not sink due to the colloid action of the particles of grain dispersing through the water.
Colloidal oatmeal is a versatile ingredient with numerous benefits for both skin health and overall well-being. Here are some ways in how it can be used in cosmetics and bath products:
Moisturizers and Lotions:
Colloidal oatmeal is commonly found in moisturizers and lotions due to its emollient properties. It softens and soothes the skin, making it an excellent choice for addressing dryness and itchiness. Its unique chemical profile, including antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds called avenanthramides, and polyphenols contributes to its skin-protective effects.
Body Washes and Shower Gels:
In body washes and shower gels, colloidal oatmeal helps maintain skin hydration and reduce irritation. It’s particularly beneficial for sensitive skin or conditions like eczema (dermatitis) where itchy, scaly, or patchy skin occurs.
Bath Products:
Colloidal oatmeal is often sold in the form of bath powders. Adding it to your bathwater can provide soothing relief for dry or irritated skin. It’s especially useful after radiation treatments for cancer, as it helps soothe skin irritation caused by these treatments1.
Shampoos and Conditioners:
Some shampoos and conditioners include colloidal oatmeal to calm the scalp and maintain healthy hair.
